Trust and Sharing Healthcare Data

If you’ve read Stephen M. R. Covey’s book, The Speed of Trust, you remember its bold assertion: trust changes everything.

In the book, Covey writes, “Low trust slows everything—every decision, every communication, and every relationship.” Conversely, Covey claims, high-trust relationships result in better outcomes in all areas—from families to organizations.

The need to share healthcare data is at an all-time high. Payers are clamoring for increasing amounts of clinical data, while providers have a strong desire to ingest actionable payer insights that help them efficiently close care gaps. So why are so many organizations still struggling to share data efficiently?

In my role as VP of Corporate Development at Moxe, I’ve talked with existing and prospective customers and have come to realize that trust plays a huge role in decisions that are made around data sharing. Low trust between providers and payers is one factor that’s preventing the right data from getting to the right hands at the right time.

Often providers and payers feel like their objectives are diametrically opposed and that they’re not even speaking the same language. The payers’ need for data to do their job and the providers’ hesitancy to send too much or incorrect data has created payer-provider relationships that are fraught with friction and distrust.

Imagining a different way

What if payers could get the exact data they need without, for lack of a better term, bugging providers for it? What if providers didn’t have to guess what they should or shouldn’t send to payers and could rely on a trusted third-party intermediary to send the exact data that’s needed, and nothing more, in a format that’s tailored to the desired use case?

That's why Moxe was born: out of a desire to reduce the unnecessary back-and-forth between providers and payers and to deliver data in a way that changes the way healthcare works. Moxe's privacy-centric, bidirectional data sharing technologies enable automation in a variety of release of information, revenue cycle, and care gap closure workflows. Moxe helps providers and payers work together as a team and move towards the shared goal of delivering more informed, more affordable healthcare.

A win-win solution

With a fundamental desire to improve the way healthcare as a whole works, Moxe’s solutions are a win-win for providers and payers. Our neutral network enables providers to set up the exact release configurations for clinical and claims data so that requestors get what they need, but not more than that. And that fosters trust!

Ultimately both payers and providers share a common objective to drive higher quality outcomes at lower costs. Afterall, with less administrative waste, more resources can be invested in healthcare programs that improve access to care and quality of life.

I hope that as more members of the healthcare ecosystem are efficiently connected with the highest quality data, more of those members will see data sharing not as a burden, but rather as a powerful tool that can improve population health while driving down the cost of care.

A recently released report from KLAS describes Moxe’s digital solution as one that “ . . . improves the efficiency of data exchange between provider and payer organizations for release of information (ROI), HEDIS® reporting, and payer audits of risk contracts (which can improve provider reimbursements). Moxe also integrates with provider organizations’ EMRs to provide efficient patient-information exchange services. Customers are highly satisfied with the product.”
